In the Summer
Climate change effects the following
- The problem caused by climate change is warming summers. That sounds like a good thing to most people, but not when it is happening too quickly and it’s out of our control.
- Warmer summers/winters have already started to put a huge dent in the moose population. The warmer winters allow ticks to still thrive where back even in the late 90’s and early 20’s the winters were much colder and harsher, killing off the ticks especially in Rangeley and other more Northerner parts of Maine. Now that is not the case, the amount of ticks that can be found on one single moose is scary. There can be about 60,000 ticks on one moose, they take the blood from the moose and the moose is unable to replenish their blood supply quick enough and they’re too weak to move and eventually starve to death. Maine is known for Moose, many out of staters have never seen them before, they are a very large tourist attraction.
The examples above show that nature affects other industries, like the marketing industry for the small town. In the summer tourist like to hike, kayak, and visit some of our local restaurants. Most people wouldn’t believe how many times you could get asked where to find a moose each day. Another way the summer season can take a hit is if it has been a rainy summer. Also caused by climate change, more frequent rain doesn’t allow families to do the summer activities they had planned, this results in them spending less money and intern means less money for people who work in a tourist town like Rangeley. Lots of rain doesn’t allow customers to sit outside while they enjoy their food at a local restaurant or to rent fat bikes from a local fat bike store.
